Everyone knows the word 'sustainability' these days. According to the Global Language Monitor, ‘Sustainability’ was the 3rd most popular business buzzword of 2011, falling short of ‘content’ and ‘social media’. However, as with many buzzwords, the true definition of sustainability is difficult to pin down; branching across huge spatial scales (from global development down to personal living) and dynamic topical scales coined by different specialties (from economic systems and employee welfare to deep green thinkers and development activists). Simply search 'sustainability' in Google and you will see the dilemma!
In essence sustainability is the development of a system that has the ability to maintain an ideal and flourishing condition without collapse and without exploiting other systems in the process.
Simply looking around our modern society, this does not sound like the state of any systems. Therefore are our efforts futile?
Even personally; the moment we attribute ourselves to living a sustainable lifestyle we ultimately become hypocrites, because it's impossible! "Resistance is futile" (Star Trek) indeed sums up how we sometimes feel about sustainability sometimes. So why should we try to be sustainable if we cannot even define it and let alone ever achieve it?
Raised in a foreign culture, educated with a BSc in Environmental Science, nurtured as an artist, driven by my passion for creativity and pursuing a career in corporate sustainability, the inner intrigue in the concepts of sustainability is unavoidable for me! I'm no expert but my circumstances have all led me to this point and this blog is an attempt at exploring how elements of my life ameliorate my passions.
Essentially this blog is one sustainability hypocrite giving insight to other sustainability hypocrites on how to reduce their impact on the world.
Attempting to be sustainable is no easy task. We can't solve everything ourselves but we can help the world on its way. You can't enjoy a beach without every little grain of sand. We all need support.
Evidence of someone else changing their lifestyle gives us hope, stimulates passion and generates new ideas.
So this is what this website is for. Inspiring. Equipping. Directing. Advising... whatever you need it to be...
